The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: The Art and Business of Songwriting - Kathryn Bostic Kathryn Bostic  Composer and singer/songwriter Kathryn Bostic is known for her work on film, TV and live theater. She is a recipient of many fellowships and awards including the prestigious Sundance Fellowship for Feature Film Scoring, BMI Conducting Fellowship, and a 2013 Sundance Fellowship for Documentary Film Scoring that took place at the renowned Skywalker Ranch.

Bostic’s scores can be heard in productions with a lineup of award-winning directors and writers. Her most recent film is DEAR WHITE PEOPLE (directed by Justin Simien), which premiered in the Sundance 2014 Film Festival and earned the Best Breakout Talent Award. Lionsgate Roadside Attractions are releasing the film on October 17th.

She was awarded Best Music in a Film by the African American Film Critics Association for her work on the film MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, from award-winning director Ava DuVernay. She also created the score for Ava’s previous films VENUS VS and I WILL FOLLOW. Her upcoming projects include the upcoming PBS American Masters piece AUGUST WILSON – THE GROUND ON WHICH I STAND (directed by Sam Pollard) which will air in early 2015.

In addition to her work in film, Bostic has written for Broadway, most notably collaborating with the award-winning playwright August Wilson on GEM OF THE OCEAN and various productions of his last play RADIO GOLF. Her work on Broadway also includes BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO starring Robin Williams, written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph. She is an Ovation Awards nominee and a Drama Desk nominee for “Outstanding Music in a Play” and her score of music and ambient textures in BENGAL TIGER garnered a win in the Sound Design category for this collaboration as well as a Tony nomination.

Kathryn has toured and/or recorded with many renowned artists including Nas, k.d. Lang, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and David Byrne.
The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: The Art and Business of Songwriting - Laura Karpman Laura Karpman  Four-time Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman’s vibrant, diverse career includes performances by the Los Angeles and Czech Philharmonics, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Houston, National, Detroit, and Prague Symphonies, and American Composers Orchestra. She has become recognized for works that bring together music, image, and narrative. Her recent multi-media work ASK YOUR MAMA, written for Jessye Norman and The Roots, premiered to a sold-out house at Carnegie Hall which commissioned it, debuted in LA at the Hollywood Bowl, and returned to New York’s Apollo Theater in March 2013. She has also written scores for every major network and cable station, as well as studio and independent features, animation (feature Annie award nomination) and videogame music for Warner Brothers, Microsoft and Sony Online Entertainment. She has won two GANG Awards.

In concert music, recent and upcoming premieres include a collaboration with NPR’s the Kitchen Sisters at the Cabrillo Festival under the baton of Marin Alsop, Different Lanes commissioned by Pacific Serenades for string quartet and 2 ipads, La Siren, a multimedia, a work about the ocean for the Pacific Symphony, and the One Ten Project for the Los Angeles Opera, celebrating both the 70th anniversary of the dedication of the freeway and the 25th anniversary of the Opera Company. She looks forward to her new opera, which she’s writing with New York Times columnist Gail Collins as well as new works for David Krakauer and Evelyn Glennie.

Karpman has received the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Ives Fellowship and several ASCAP and Meet the Composer awards. She has had residencies at Tanglewood and the MacDowell Colony, and was among the first Sundance Institute Fellows, and has recently served as an advisor to that program. She attended the Aspen Music School and L' Ecole des Arts Americaines, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Michigan, and received her doctorate from The Juilliard School where she studied with Milton Babbitt. She is on the UCLA Theater, Film and Television faculty, directed Berklee School of Music’s first master degree in films scoring program and was a guest composer of The Juilliard Composition Forum, USC’s Film Scoring program, Frost School of Music and many other distinguished institutions.
The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: The Art and Business of Songwriting - Penka Kouneva Penka Kouneva  Composer Penka Kouneva enjoys a reputation as a unique talent. Working alongside Steve Jablonsky she composed the score for PRINCE OF PERSIA: FORGOTTEN SANDS and TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN video games, and has scored many indie features (MIDNIGHT MOVIE) and television (SyFy channel telefilms, FORENSIC FILES). Her style called "haunting and passionate" is a blend of her Eastern European heritage, classical training and media scoring. Recently, Penka scored the award-winnig casual game Rollers of the Realm, Intense Life, the shooters H-Hour: World's Elite, Galaxy, IronKill and others.

In 1999 Penka arrived to Los Angeles with one contact, small savings and great passion for media music. In the following decade she worked as an orchestrator and composer on titles grossing $10 billion worldwide: Matrix, Transformers, Pirates, Need For Speed (films); World of Warcraft, Starcraft II, Gears of War 2, 3, Sims 3, Diablo III, Dragon Age II (games). Last year she became the first woman since Shirley Walker to be the Lead Orchestrator on two studio films with budgets over $100M -- Elysium and Ender's Game.

Penka's composition awards include : the SUNDANCE Composer Fellowship, two Ovation Awards, The Copland Award, Hollywood Music in Media Award, Square Enix Music Online nomination, Independent Music Award, and others. Penka is on the Advisory Board of Game Developers Conference and an Advisor for the Sundance Institute. Recently, she began a staff composing job and is also completing her second orchestral cinematic album The Woman Astronaut, due in January 2015.
The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: The Art and Business of Songwriting - Deborah Lurie Deborah Lurie  Deborah Lurie began her career scoring short films like the celebrated "George Lucas in Love." In the years following, Lurie worked as an orchestrator on studio films such as "The X-Files" and "X-Men 2," and as a composer for additional music on "Bubble Boy" and "View From The Top." In 2004, she reunited with "Lucas in Love" director Joe Nussbaum, scoring the pre-teen comedy "Sleepover" for MGM. In the following years she went on to score acclaimed films such as “The Little Traitor,” and the Tim Burton-produced animated feature "9." Deborah has scored three Lasse Hallström films; "An Unfinished Life" starring Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman and Jennifer Lopez, the box office hit "Dear John" and most recently “Safe Haven.” Additonal box office hits include: “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” Craig Brewer’s “Footloose,” and “Katy Perry: Part of Me.”

Lurie has worked frequently with Danny Elfman, composing additional music for "Wanted," "Spiderman 3," and the IMAX film "Deep Sea: 3D" as well as arranging/orchestrating for "Charlotte's Web," "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory," and "Alice in Wonderland." More recently, she worked with Danny on the music for a brand new ride at Hong Kong Disneyland called “Mystic Manor”.

Lurie's work in pop music began with productions for the live stage, including arranging and producing the music for The Pussycat Dolls' live appearance at The Roxy, starring Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, and Carmen Electra. Deborah is also recognized for arranging/producing the music for the Off Broadway musical "Bare" and Vegas' hit show "PeepShow," staring at Planet Hollywood Casino. In film, Lurie’s arrangements appear in the musicals "Dreamgirls" and "Fame."
The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: The Art and Business of Songwriting - Lolita Ritmanis Lolita Ritmanis  Lolita Ritmanis is a ten time Emmy Award-nominated composer, having won this award in 2002 for her work on the animated series Batman Beyond. She received her first Primetime Emmy Nomination for her Main Title Theme for the Warner Bros. television series Justice League. Her second Primetime Emmy Nomination was shared with her partners: Michael McCuistion, Kristopher Carter (aka Dynamic Music Partners) for their musical – Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Mayhem of the Music Meister, starring Neil Patrick Harris. Prior to her successful career as a composer, Lolita worked as an orchestrator for composers Michael Kamen, Basil Poledouris, Mark Snow and Shirley Walker (to name but a few). She was an orchestrator on over 100 films, mini-series and television programs, including Lethal Weapon 4, X-Files Movie, Swimfan, Robin Hood-Prince of Thieves, Final Destination and The West Wing. Lolita’s concert works as well as four original musicals have been performed throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Taiwan and Australia. Her cantata “A New Day” was performed at Lincoln Center in New York City. Her music for film and television has been performed at film music festivals in Ubeda, Spain in 2012, as well as Tenerife- Spain this past summer. Lolita serves on the Music Peer Group Executive Committee of the Television Academy. On October 4th, 2014 Lolita will attend the premiere of her new symphonic work "An Overture to Light," performed in Riga, Latvia. She is also completing a collaborative work, a children's opera, which will premiere at the end of November this year. Lolita is currently composing music for Marvel’s: Avengers Assemble.


The Society of Composers and Lyricists Seminar: The Art and Business of Songwriting - Miriam Cutler Miriam Cutler  Emmy nominated Composer, MIRIAM CUTLER has an extensive background scoring independent film & TV projects. Her passion for documentary narrative has led to a focus in non-fiction and includes: Emmy winners ONE LAST HUG/HBO and GHOSTS OF ABU GHRAIB/HBO), Oscar nominated KINGSPOINT/HBO and POSTER GIRL/HBO, Emmy nominated ETHEL/HBO, VITO/HBO, THIN(HBO), DESERT OF FORBIDDEN ART/PBS, Bafta nominated LOST IN LA MANCHA/IFC, Sundance winners AMERICAN PROMISE(PBS), SCOUTS HONOR(PBS) and LICENSED TO KILL/PBS, and Peabody Award Winning THE CASTRO.

Miriam Co-Produced and scored ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT/OWN and has served as Lab Advisor for the Sundance Institute Documentary Composers Lab, on documentary juries for the Sundance FF, Independent Spirit Awards, IDA Awards, AFI FF, Bend, and Ashland. She has co-produced two Grammy-nominated live jazz albums on PolyGram/ Verve for Joe Williams, and albums for Nina Simone, Shirley Horn, and Marlena Shaw as well as independently released albums of her own songs and soundtracks. She is a long serving Board Member for the Society of Composers and Lyricists. Miriam recently joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Documentary Branch, and is proud to be part of the US State Department’s American Film Showcase for whom she recently traveled to Malaysia.
