Join the Society of Composers & Lyricists in New York as we explore the creative possibilities of incorporating guitar textures into scoring. Our panel of multi-faceted composers, producers, and performers will offer live demonstrations of acoustic and electric guitar-based instruments, VSTs, and sample libraries, including products from Line 6 and Orange Tree Samples.

Subjects will include: optimal use of sample libraries, non-traditional ways to turn synths into guitars, tools for expanding an electric guitar into a host of electric, acoustic and exotic instruments, and insights into when and how best to work with a guitarist to bring your music to life.

ASCAP®-winning and MTV VMA®-nominated composer Tom Salta has received widespread industry acclaim for his world-class produced hybrid scores featured in film, television and video games such as Machine Games’ Wolfstein: Youngblood & Cyberpilot, Microsoft’s iconic Halo series (G.A.N.G.® Best Original Soundtrack Award), Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Red Steel (IGN® Award for Best Original Score), Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and H.A.W.X series, as well as the epic theme music for the record-breaking online multiplayer game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, which has sold in excess of 50 million units with over 400 million players.

New York-based producer, arranger, keyboardist, vocalist, and engineer Scott Yahney recently completed the score for the web series Alex 2GUNS. Scott will be demonstrating effective ways to use guitar sample libraries with www.orangetreesamples.com.

Guitarist John Benthal has worked or recorded with artists including: Alicia Keys, Paul Simon, T-Bone Burnett, Peabo Bryson, Harry Connick Jr, Steven Van Zandt, Bernie Williams (#51), and others. He also appeared as on-screen mandolinist in the movie The Royal Tenenbaums. John has been the principal guitarist in many Broadway shows and is currently the guitarist at Lion King NYC. He has played on soundtracks for several award-winning movies, including: Doubt (Howard Shore), Enchanted (Menken/Schwartz), Sin Nombre (Marcelo Zarvos), and most recently Raúl Juliá: The World’s a Stage (Chris Hajian). Upcoming releases include: Disney’s Lady and the Tramp (Joe Trapanese) and Spielberg’s West Side Story (arr. David Newman).

Emmy Award®-winning composer and guitarist Mark Roos lives to connect the viewing audience with the message that is being conveyed on the screen in the most powerful way known to man — through music. His mediums of specialty include computer games, full-feature and documentary films, television programs, radio and custom music production. He successfully delivers high quality scores for such companies as Microsoft Xbox, Discovery Channel, Delta Airlines, Honda, U.S. Air Force, United Way, MSNBC, Eastman-Kodak, 3Com and many others. Mark also serves as an SCL Board Member.

Moderator

Mark Suozzo composes music for feature films and documentaries. His feature film credits include Whit Stillman’s films Love & Friendship, Metropolitan (Oscar Nomination), Barcelona, Last Days of Disco, Damsels in Distress and The Cosmopolitans; Shari Springer-Berman and Bob Pulcini’s American Splendor (Oscar Nomination) and The Nanny Diaries; Mary Harron’s The Notorious Bettie Page. He has scored many documentaries for HBO, and PBS’s American Experience, POV and Independent Lens. They include Off the Menu, The Young and the Dead, Sound and Fury (Oscar Nomination), Shelter Dogs, Unknown Soldier, Well-Founded Fear, The Senators’ Bargain and TB: The Forgotten Plague, and Camerini-Robertson’s 10-part series How Democracy Works Now (NYFF). Mark is Co-Director of Film Scoring at NYU/Steinhardt.
