Indian classical music is one of the oldest systems of music in the world. In this seminar, we will explore the building blocks of Indian classical music including the raga system, common rhythmic patterns or tala, and applying these concepts in composing cues for Commercials, Film, and Television.

Aks (Ashwin Krishnan Subramanian) is a composer for film & TV, ads, and games from UCLA’s Film Scoring program. He has his roots in a family of professional Indian classical musicians in Maryland. He has studied Carnatic vocal music for over 15 years, as well as Carnatic violin and mridangam (percussion). Aks studied composition with AR Rahman at KM Music Conservatory. After placing first in his class, he was invited to assist Rahman with his films. He also toured as a musician and vocalist on Rahman’s live shows. Aks now writes for film & TV from his studio in Playa Vista.

With his wife and musical partner Lakshmi, Aks also produces albums and shows of Electronic Bhakti Music. Aks & Lakshmi have released 8 studio albums including The Bhakti Movement with Sony Music, and perform shows featuring ancient Indian poetry across the US and abroad. He has composed over 150 original songs.
