Enter the world of vocal direction. How do you achieve the best vocal performance for a scene, song, or cue? These experienced panelists will give you their in-depth perspectives from collaborating with showrunners to working with singers in the booth, on set, and on-stage, to bringing out the best vocal performance possible.

Tim Lauer is an Emmy-nominated, Nashville-based composer, producer, songwriter, and musician. He was Executive Music Producer for seasons five and six of the television show Nashville, following T Bone Burnett and Buddy Miller who previously held the position. He produced over 125 cast recordings for Nashville and was also a music producer for Greenleaf season one, where he wrote and produced the main title song performed by Mavis Staples. Recent work includes producing cast vocals, pre-records, and songs for David E Kelley’s shows Big Sky and Avalon. He’s done similar work for Amazon’s A League Of Their Own, Carnival Row, and With Love, ABC’s Women Of The Movement, NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, and CBS’ Tell Me A Story. He also wrote the main title, scored and produced the music for the Netflix comedy Country Comfort starring Katherine McPhee as well as scored and produced all the songs for the country music biopic Patsy and Loretta for Sony Pictures.

His songs have also been featured in advertisements for BMW, Toyota, Target, L’Oreal, Coke, and Nike as well as dozens of TV shows including One Tree Hill, Drop Dead Diva, Hung, The White Queen, Homeland, Teen Wolf, Pretty Little Liars, and Cougar Town. As a musician, he has played on over 300 major label albums, recording with a wide variety of artists including Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Foy Vance, Burt Bacharach, Keith Urban, Rodney Crowell, Sheryl Crow, Megadeth, and Joan Baez. He has arranged strings for Skillet, Blake Shelton, Kaleo, Dolly Parton, Shawn Mendes, Josh Stone, The Smashing Pumpkins, and many others in addition to scoring short films and podcasts and orchestrating an art installation for respected German director Wim Wenders. He has produced Mikky Ekko, Kate Voegele, John Oates, The McCrary Sisters, and Buck Owens.

Paul Mirkovich is an accomplished Musical Director, Arranger, Composer, Pianist, Keyboardist, and Vocalist. For the past 11 years and 22 seasons Paul has served as Musical Director for The Voice. In that time Paul has arranged and performed over 5000 songs with his band on the show and recorded nearly 4000 for streaming release. This vast body of work on this show alone makes Paul and his band the most prolific band in Primetime on television in the last 11 years. In addition to hundreds of hours of television on The Voice, Paul has also served as Musical Director for shows like The Emmys and Rockstar, performances on the Academy Awards, Kennedy Center Honors, The Super Bowl, and many others. As Musical Director, Paul has performed and led the band for television specials and live concert films for Cher, Pink, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, and more, and has served as Musical Director for tours for Cher, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, Tori Kelly, Maroon 5, and many others.

Paul was also a member of the Platinum selling bands Nelson, Whitesnake, and Foreigner back in the big hair 80s and 90s. Current projects in preparation right now include show prep with Pink for an upcoming tour, Season 22 of The Voice, prep for performances on American Song Contest, and music for an upcoming major video game release in late 2022.

Sally Stevens has worked in music in Hollywood as a solo singer, choral singer, and choral director/vocal contractor for six decades. In the early days, she toured with Ray Conniff and Nat ‘King’ Cole, and was a production singer at The Sahara, in Las Vegas. The first film score she sang on was How The West Was Won and the most recent was, Under The Boardwalk, an animation film not yet released. In between, the projects have stretched from Sound of Music to Deadpool 2, on which she sang and contracted vocals for Composer Tyler Bates.

Over the years she has sung on literally hundreds of film scores and television projects, involving music of every style imaginable. She sang solo vocals in film scores for composers Lalo Schifrin, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Small, Dominic Frontiere, Burt Bacharach, Danny Elfman, and others. She sang and contracted singers for The Simpsons for 29 seasons, and Family Guy since the inception of the shows. She also sings the main titles, currently still airing from inception, for both of those series. In the sixties she worked on Variety TV, did many commercials through the sixties and seventies, as part of the Ron Hicklin singers, and toured as a featured soloist with Burt Bacharach in concert. She has written lyrics for Dave Grusin, Don Ellis, Burt Bacharach, Dominic Frontiere, Mike Melvoin, and others, and has assembled choirs or helped to find the right soloists for John Williams, Alf Clausen, Walter Murphy, Marc Shaiman, Alan Silvestri, Elmer Bernstein, Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard, and more. She served as Choral Director for the OSCARS broadcast for 22 years and has been part of the governance of her unions SAG and AFTRA, now SAG-AFTRA, since the mid-sixties.

Laura Jackman is a versatile session singer, performer, and vocalist located in Los Angeles, CA, and has been singing in a professional context since the age of 9. Laura has had the immense pleasure of lending her voice to over 100 major films, TV episodes, and albums, and she has vocal-contracted for multiple projects as well. She has worked with composers and artists who continue to inspire her including Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, John Williams, John Debney, Pinar Toprak, Paul McCartney, Ramin Djawadi, Rickey Minor, Richard Carpenter, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Hudson, Randy Newman, and more. Some of her recent credits include the upcoming Hocus Pocus 2, Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Spiderman: No Way Home. She also performed all of the background vocals for One Republic’s recent single, “West Coast”.

Laura is simultaneously a proud member of the leadership team of the Society of Composers & Lyricists as its Chief Operations Officer. She has always strived to amplify media music and the artists who create it as vocalist, vocal contractor, arranger, or any other multitudes of roles. She has extensive music industry experience for organizations including The Hollywood Bowl, TAXI A&R, SAG-AFTRA, The Kodály Association of Southern California (KASC), and LA Youth Studio. Her work with LA Youth Studio teaches and inspires young singers on the techniques, protocols, and skills necessary for session singing and for helping usher in the next generation of talented, Los Angeles session singers.
