Come From Away is the filmed version of the award-winning Broadway musical which tells the story of 7,000 people stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland after all flights into the US are grounded on September 11, 2001. As the people of Newfoundland graciously welcome the “come from aways” into their community in the aftermath, the passengers and locals alike process what’s happened while finding love, laughter, and new hope in the unlikely and lasting bonds that they forge. The live performance of Come From Away was filmed at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City, where the Broadway production is staged, for an audience that included 9/11 survivors and frontline workers. Irene Sankoff & David Hein are the married, Canadian writing team behind the hit Broadway Musical Come From Away. Before theatres closed due to the pandemic, there were five Come From Away companies performing internationally, with additional licenses around the world. David and Irene are thrilled that Come From Away is now part of the global reopening of theatre. It is currently playing eight shows a week on Broadway!

Their first show, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, based on David’s mother’s true story, was the hit of the 2009 Toronto Fringe Festival and then was picked up for a commercial run by Mirvish Productions. It has now played and won Best Musical awards in the NYMF Festival and across North America, with Sankoff and Hein performing in most productions. The live filmed version of Come From Away, shot onstage at the show’s Broadway home, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, is now streaming globally in over 100 countries on Apple TV+. Irene and David are also continuing to develop the Come From Away movie, both with eOne Entertainment. They have become sought-after creators and have projects in various stages of development with Disney, A Very Good Production, and Warner Brothers. And watch and listen for their work in the recent Destination Canada campaign Canada Nice.

Irene and David are the recipients of the Good Neighbor Award from the Four Freedoms Park Conservancy and the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada which recognizes Canadians’ exceptional accomplishments.  They are proud members of the Dramatists Guild, Writers Guild East, and ASCAP.
