Artificial Intelligence has arrived and is being used in ways that used to be reserved for science fiction movies. From fears of a real-life HAL9000 expelling us from our metaphorical spaceship to AI as a panacea to free us from the tedium of task-based repetition, we hear proclamations about the future of intelligent machines vacillate from utopian paradise to dystopian nightmare. This seminar examines the present state of AI in music with an eye to where it is headed and its implications for music makers.

SCL Board Member Fletcher Beasley is a composer, songwriter, mixer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator. He first became interested in music technology when he discovered that he could hear his arrangements through MIDI without having to yell over the din of disinterested drummers. Fletcher began his composition career as a composer and sound designer for video games in the Sega Genesis/SNES era before moving into film and television. He has worked on hundreds of projects in film, television, games, records, advertising, and theme parks. Fletcher teaches music production and film scoring at UCLA Extension and Santa Monica College.

Jack D. Elliot is an innovative industry veteran who has diverse and distinctive discography packed with artists like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Kelly Rowland, Lo Fidelity Allstars, and Dolly Parton. He has over 20,000 compositions in television shows around the world including NAVY NCIS, Impractical Jokers, American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, Real Housewives of Orange County, Access Hollywood, E! News Live, and Good Morning America; has created original scores for networks ABC, CBS, Discovery, Lifetime, Bravo, and more; worked with advertisers such as Progressive Insurance, V8, and Dr. Pepper, and composed music for video games like Feral Rites for Insomniac Games/SONY. Jack has produced for award-winning songwriter Diane Warren for eight years and produced and wrote with superstar David Foster.

As a board member for the Society of Composers & Lyricists, Jack plans and hosts educational seminars in Los Angeles covering a range of subjects relevant to media composers. He is also actively involved in organizing the SCL’s annual Oscar and Emmy receptions, the SCL Awards, and writes product reviews for The Score magazine.
