Time Will Tell is a sparkling exploration of identity and destiny, showcasing the ever-evolving craft of pianist/composer Andy Milne. The recording is Milne’s latest collaboration with bassist John Hébert and drummer Clarence Penn, together forming Unison. It follows the trio’s The ReMission (2020), winner of Jazz Album of the Year: Group at the 2021 Juno Awards, and features guest performances from saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and kotoist Yoko Reikano Kimura.

The album chronicles Milne’s lifelong efforts to uncover his birth family history. Adopted as an infant, his efforts to connect with his birth family proved fruitless – until 2018, when the gift of an Ancestry.com DNA test changed everything. Time Will Tell reflects part of Milne’s expedition navigating the mixed emotions associated with this identity paradox. The 10-track recording is not a note-for-note musical account of these experiences; however the journey inspired and informed the creative process, and the compositions are a subconscious reflection of his experience. Milne, who is also an assistant professor of music at the University of Michigan, met his birth mother days before composing much of the music and, in many ways, it was created as though it were a soundtrack, underscoring feelings of family, relationships and loss.
