On the Basis of Sex with Mychael Danna and Kesha

On the Basis of Sex is based on the true story of young Ruth Bader Ginsburg­ – then a struggling attorney and new mother – who faces adversity and numerous obstacles in her fight for equal rights. When Ruth (Felicity Jones) takes on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband Marty (Armie Hammer), she knows it could forever change the way the courts and the United States view gender discrimination. The film also chronicles the romance between Ruth and Marty, a partnership that succeeded both personally and professionally. Directed by Mimi Leder and written by Daniel Stiepleman, On the Basis of Sex also co-stars Justin Theroux, Kathy Bates, Sam Waterston, Jack Reynor, and Cailee Spaeny.

Mychael Danna is an Academy Award®-winning film composer recognized for his evocative blending of non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music. His body of work includes his Oscar®-winning score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi following his collaborations with Lee on The Ice Storm and Ride with the Devil. Danna also received the 2013 Golden Globe Award for Life of Pi. Other collaborations include the multiple Oscar®-nominee Moneyball, and the Oscar®-winning drama Capote, the Oscar®-nominated The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, as well as Tideland, Vanity Fair, Monsoon Wedding, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Breach, and Shattered Glass.

For television, Mychael won the Emmy® Award for World Without End, and Mychael and Jeff Danna were Emmy® nominated for Camelot, Tyrant, and in 2018 for their work on Alias Grace. Mychael was also Emmy® nominated this year for the theme music for The Last Tycoon. Frequently working together, Mychael and Jeff also worked on Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, receiving an Annie nomination for Outstanding Achievement, Music in an Animated Feature Production, Warner Animation Group’s Storks, and the Oscar®-nominated animated film The Breadwinner.

Among Mychael’s other awards are the Frederick Loewe Award for Film Composing (2013), the World Soundtrack Awards for Film Composer of the Year, and Best Score of the Year (both 2013), and the Hollywood Film Award for Composer of the Year (2016).

Kesha’s latest album Rainbow, called “an artistic feat” by Entertainment Weekly and “the best music of her career” by Rolling Stone, marks a new beginning for her. Based around inner strength and musical exploration, the album finds Kesha at “her defiant, unbridled best” (USA Today), boasting collaborators ranging from Ben Folds to Eagles of Death Metal to Dolly Parton. The album has earned Kesha her first-ever Grammy® nominations at the 60th Annual Grammy® Awards for “Best Pop Vocal Album” and “Best Pop Solo Perormance” for Praying.

When Kesha released her debut album, Animal in 2010, Billboard declared her its Hot 100 Artist. She has had 9 Top 10 hits on The Billboard Hot 100, including four #1 singles at Top 40 Radio. Kesha took home the MTV EMA for Best New Act in November 2010 and was nominated for 2 American Music Awards, 3 MTV VMA Awards, and 6 Billboard Awards. Kesha also executive produced two seasons of the television show Kesha: My Crazy Beautiful Life for MTV, as well as wrote a book of the same name that gave a look into the creative process of her album, Warrior.

As a songwriter she has penned her own music as well as songs for artists including Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, The Veronicas, and Miley Cyrus. She is an animal rights crusader as the Humane Society International’s first Global Ambassador and a passionate advocate for equality, being honored with the 2016 Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award. In 2016 she won Billboard’s Women in Music Trailblazer Award. She was recently named one of Time Magazine’s Time 100, their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
