With the remarkable success of ChatGPT, numerous individuals are now encountering large language models (LLMs) for the first time. Professor Callison-Burch, an authority in artificial intelligence with two decades of experience in the field, has been utilizing the OpenAI GPT model since 2021. In this presentation, he will elucidate the functioning of LLMs, their current capabilities, and their limitations. He will provide instances of how generative AI has been employed to create text, images, voices, and music. Furthermore, he will delve into the potential for fostering creativity, while also addressing the ethical and societal ramifications of AI. Chris is fully prepared to address the pertinent and pressing inquiries that many of us share. 
Chris Callison-Burch is an associate professor of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania. His course on Artificial Intelligence has one of the highest enrollments at the university with 500 students taking the class each Fall. He is best known for his research into natural language processing. His current research is focused on applications of large language models to long-standing challenge problems in artificial intelligence. His Ph.D. students joke that now whenever they ask him anything his first response is “Have you tried GPT for that?” Prof Callison-Burch has more than 100 publications, which have been cited over 20,000 times. He is a Sloan Research Fellow, and he has received faculty research awards from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and Roblox, in addition to funding from DARPA, IARPA, and the NSF.

Prof Callison-Burch recently testified before the House Judiciary IP Subcommittee alongside SCL President Ashley Irwin about the relationship of AI and Copyright law.
