Robert Sherman

SCL Ambassador ROBERT SHERMAN 1925-2012

From SCL President DAN FOLIART:

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Robert Sherman, one half of the legendary songwriting team of the Sherman Brothers. The duo was honored with our SCL Ambassador Award in 2005, and Robert’s brother Richard has continued to be a great friend of this organization. Since the Sherman Brothers wrote their first hit song, their music and lyrics have entertained us, warmed our hearts,  and always brought a smile to our face. Robert’s contributions to the American Songbook are rich, as he and his brother Richard’s prolific output continue to play around the world. The success in recent years of the theatre version of Mary Poppins, along with other Sherman Brothers works, has brought their songs to a whole new audience. Robert, along with Richard, has been feted with Oscars, Emmys and other distinguished achievement awards for such classics as Feed the Birds, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Chim Chim Cher-ee and You’re Sixteen. With Robert’s passing, part of America’s youth passes with him. The optimism exemplified in all of the Sherman Brothers’ work, no more so than in It’s a Small World, was part of the love and appreciation that Walt Disney had for the brothers, finding their voice so consistent with his vision of what would make the world a better place. Our sympathy goes out to our dear friend, Richard Sherman as well as all of Robert’s family.
