ASCAP Announces 2006 Filmscoring Workshop Participants

ASCAP SELECTS 12 ASPIRING FILM AND TV COMPOSERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2006 ASCAP TELEVISION & FILM SCORING WORKSHOP WITH RICHARD BELLIS

ASCAP Foundation Awards Will Be Presented To Outstanding Participants

ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) has selected 12 aspiring composers to participate in the 18th Annual ASCAP Television and Film Scoring Workshop with Richard Bellis, which begins July 6, 2006 in Los Angeles and runs until August 2, 2006. Initiated in 1988, the intensive month-long workshop program has gained international recognition and is widely known as a major educational and networking opportunity for aspiring composers. A jury of leading film composers selected the participants from nearly 250 submissions received from the U.S., Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel and Sweden.

Under the guidance of Emmy Award-winning composer Richard Bellis, his ninth year with the program, the 12 participants will be led through a series of seminars and hands-on training sessions that will focus on the many important business and creative elements that film composers face in the competitive world. Richard Bellis has over 20 years of industry experience as an educator, coach and author. He is a past president of the Society of Composers & Lyricists and former faculty member of the University of Southern California, where he lectured for 17 years in the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program.

“This annual workshop is one of the key activities of ASCAP’s Film & Television Music Department,” said Nancy Knutsen, Senior Vice President of Film & Television Repertory. “The multifaceted curriculum offers a one-of-a-kind experience for aspiring composers to receive hands-on training, real-world knowledge and advice from professionals at the highest levels of the film and television music industry.”

Partially funded by The ASCAP Foundation, the workshop will culminate with the presentations of three ASCAP Foundation awards: the David Rose Scholarship, the Steve Kaplan TV and Film Studies Scholarship and the Harold Arlen Film & TV Award. Each award will be given to selected workshop participants based on their excellence and professionalism, musical ability and career potential.
