The First Lady is a revelatory reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. In the East Wing of the White House, many of history’s most impactful and world-changing decisions have been hidden from view, made by America’s charismatic, complex and dynamic First Ladies. This series will peel back the curtain on the personal and political lives of three unique, enigmatic women, tracing their journeys to Washington through interweaving storylines with an enlightening intimacy, with season one focusing on Michelle Obama, Betty Ford, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Geoff Zanelli is an Emmy Award-winning composer who is a standout in the film and television scoring industry, garnering accolades and recognition for his diverse musical voice ranging from the affectingly intimate to the boldly adventurous. Musically weaving through the personal and public lives of America’s First Ladies, Zanelli most recently scored the SHOWTIME series The First Lady by the critically celebrated director Susanne Bier, executive producer/showrunner Cathy Schulman, and executive producer/star Viola Davis. In 2019, Zanelli composed for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, working with Bebe Rexha on her song titled “You Can’t Stop The Girl” which was lauded for its empowering musicality. Zanelli has also worked closely with prolific director Deon Taylor since 2018, scoring the films Traffik, The Intruder, Black and Blue, Fatale, and most recently Fear. After years of collaboration with Hans Zimmer on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Zanelli scored the fifth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which debuted at #1 worldwide in 2017. In 2006, Zanelli earned his first Emmy after scoring the original music for Steven Spielberg’s miniseries Into The West, becoming the youngest composer ever to be awarded the ‘Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Original Dramatic Score)’ accolade. Zanelli earned his second Emmy nomination for Spielberg and HBO’s The Pacific. Other notable credits include Mortdecai (Lionsgate), Rango (Paramount), Justice League (Warner Bros.), Christopher Robin (Disney), Disturbia (Paramount), The Odd Life of Timothy Green (Disney), and Madagascar: Escape to Africa (Dreamworks).
A Southern California native, Zanelli began his musical career as a guitar player and songwriter. Zanelli attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music where he received degrees in Film Scoring and Music Production & Engineering. When he returned to California in 1994, he met Zimmer and was offered a job at Remote Control Productions. Now, Zanelli is known as a versatile composer in his own right, drawing from music of all genres.
