John Titta

We are deeply saddened to report the passing of one of the most beloved members of our music community, John Titta. John lost his two-year battle with cancer on Monday. He fought the disease with the same courage and resolve that he did for creator’s rights over his long and distinguished career. During his many years in the publishing business, he worked with the who’s who of the industry. As ASCAP’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer, he guided the careers of many of our industry’s biggest names as well as offering encouragement and guidance to many at the beginning of their careers.

Although his accomplishments were extraordinary, it’s impossible to talk about John without focusing on his love, kindness, humor and compassion. Within our ASCAP family, I have never seen such an outpouring of love and devastation as I have seen today. Perhaps the most poignant statement summed up what so many of us are feeling. “I just can’t imagine what my life is going to be without him.” ASCAP President & Chairman, Paul Williams wrote, “John—you had a song in your heart always, and you will always be in our hearts. I miss you already.” ASCAP CEO  Elizabeth Matthews referred to him as “the north star for me personally, and for all of us at ASCAP.” His dear friend and the legendary songwriter, Sammy Cahn’s widow, Tita wrote, “yes, there were some things John wasn’t good at—being unkind, being petty, turning away from a friend, having no time for someone who needed him—but for the rest, his heart was wide open.”

The last time I talked with him was a couple of weeks ago. He was in the mood to discuss our favorite songs, singers, bands and guest appearances he made with many of them on guitar or bass and it was apparent, although his body was failing, his spirit was alive and well and the muse of music embraced and enveloped him as the conversation went on. His love and spirit will continue to caress all of us who were fortunate to know him.

Rest in peace, our dear friend.
