On Mothering Sunday, 1924, Jane Fairchild, foundling, maid to the Niven household, has no mother to go to. Jane meets with her secret lover, the young heir of a neighbouring estate. He is about to be married to a woman more befitting his social status, and the time has come to end the affair, but events unfold in ways Jane could never have predicted. Tragedy eventually becomes a source of liberation for Jane as the emboldening power of grief inspires her to leave her servile position, become a writer and own her story. R | 104mins
