When people think of writing for TV and film, they often imagine placing existing songs as needle drops. But there’s another major field for songwriters: writing songs specific to a story. Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore show us their process when writing songs for Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. From studying the script and getting into the rhythm of the series, to using technology to the songwriter’s advantage, they will walk us through their process from idea to finished song.

Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore are the accomplished writing team whose work has appeared on stages and screens around the world. In 2019, the duo composed five original songs for Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – a first for the Emmy-winning series. One of those songs, “One Less Angel,” was nominated for a 2020 Primetime Emmy for “Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.” They’ve continued writing original songs for the series for both 2022’s season 4 and the newly announced fifth and final season. Their theatrical credits include a commission from the Williamstown Theater Festival, as well as residencies with the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the Mercer Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals, and the American Music Theatre Project at their alma mater, Northwestern University. Named a Richard Rodgers Award Finalist, their romantic mystery Triangle premiered at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley to rave reviews and went on to receive six Theatre Bay Area Awards as the “Outstanding World Premiere Musical” of the year. They are currently developing a slate of four-stage pieces, including new musicals for Universal Theatrical Group, and for Grove/Whitman Commissions. They are currently developing a slate of four-stage pieces, including new musicals for Universal Theatrical Group, and for Michael Cassel Group.

Chris Wirsig is an award-winning composer, songwriter, and producer. His music can be heard in games like the acclaimed Top Ten iPad game Alien Tribe 2, the comedy feature 39 And A Half, and in TV shows on ABC, E!, History, MTV, Fox Sports, CNN, Bravo, Audience Network/DirecTV, and many others. Recent projects include an LGBTQ+ animated comedy series pilot, Be More Popcorn, the Halloween documentary series Halloween Obsessed, two episodes of the web series Civil Disobedience, as well as a charity project with an orchestral cover version of Depeche Mode’s “People Are People,” a project with 36 international musicians and singers.

Apart from film scoring, Chris runs a production music catalog and co-writes with different artists and songwriters. He is a member of the Recording Academy, the Production Music Association, and serves on the SCL’s Board of Directors.
