NEW YORK CHAPTER
The Society of Composers & Lyricists in New York
(SCL NY) aims to foster community for local composers and songwriters. New York City's music industry offers distinctive opportunities, which we aim to engage through our programming. We help members develop their careers through seminars, industry screenings, networking events, and collaborations with other allied organizations.
Started in 2011, the SCL's New York community continues to grow, building on the SCL's long history in Los Angeles. We invite you to get in touch with us at the bottom of the page!
NY MENTOR PROGRAM
The SCL NY Mentor Program is designed for entry-level SCL Associate Member composers and songwriters. The current program features interactive workshops and seminars, offered online and in-person several times a month from October through May.
Mentees have the opportunity to interact extensively with working music creators and a wide variety of industry professionals (among them orchestrators, copyists, directors, music editors, music supervisors, recording engineers, producers, performing rights society administrators, etc.) who generously volunteer their time and expertise to introduce the mentees to many aspects of the profession in a variety of media and genres.
In addition to the workshops and seminar activities, mentee participants are given scoring assignments and provided with professional mentor feedback.
NY SONGARTS
SongArts, active in both New York and Los Angeles, focuses on SCL composers, lyricists, and songwriters creating songs for a variety of media including TV, film, theatre, and games. Our programs include SongSync sessions in which our members present their songs to music supervisors for constructive criticism and analytical feedback. SongArts programs will be held online until we are able to return to in-person sessions.
To energize our songwriters during the pandemic, NY and LA SongArts collaborated to produce a Global SongDemic, pairing SCL member songwriters from the US, Canada, UK/Ireland, and Australia. The event fostered new collaborations and community ties, with a listening session showcasing the group's superb tracks to the SCL membership-at-large.
